How To Waste Your Time

by malan on April 16, 2008

It’s been a little while since I’ve been able to post here. I’ve become distracted with multiple new fascinations. I love trying new things and the internet is an ocean of things to get lost inside of. Between Twitter, flickr, facebook, myspace, seo, sem, the band, the iPhone, work and my own personal websites I feel like I’m spewing quite a bit of stuff out there… and maybe someday I’ll figure out why.

Here’s a run down of everything I’ve got going right now.

Twitter: I’ve held off on this for as long as I could because I knew what would happen, but I finally signed up and sure enough, it sucking my life away. Check out the tweet-action.

flickr: If you haven’t noticed I’ve been uploading photos all day almost every day from all sorts of locations. I think someday i will be able to look back at these things and augment my natural memory… which is fading by the day. See the photos.

Facebook: I’m using facebook mainly for some seo, sem stuff that I’ve been working on and do not accept personal friends or find personal friends, business only.

Myspace: oh God don’t even get me started here. been on it for years have more than 3 profiles and keep 2 of them updated almost daily. Time Suck.

SEO, SEM: This is my new obsession. I used to despise anyone who ever said the words search engine optimization to me, now I have become completely obsessed with it and am getting good at it. At this point I can pretty much take any phrase and rank very well, very fast with it.

Born A Number: We’re doing 3 weekends in a row this month which is a lot for us. I’m over doing the 5 shows a week thing in beer bars all over the region in an attempt to claim that I’m on tour. In the long run it’s just not worth the time and effort for me. With this group we’re working smart, defining & refining the sound, making as many connections in the business as possible (you wouldn’t believe me if I told you) and when the real record drops it’s game over, game on and time for the fireworks.

iPhone: How did I ever live without this thing? I’m on it 24 hours a day and I lay in bed at night staring at it before I go to sleep. It’s my phone, date keeper, internet connection, emailer, camera, video camera (yes, my iPhone does video), it’s my guitar (yes I play guitar it) and it’s my headphone music maker. I just installed Fring, a new iPhone app that allows me to make calls using Skype and not use any of my calling plan’s minutes. So uh, yeah free calls.

Work: We’ve been cramming lately on several new projects that are going to rock. Our team launched the Cox Help Center site months back as well as the new Breeder’s Cup and NPPL sites. James is kicking butt lately and putting out some amazing work and a fantastic logo for our sister company Cable Cam who’s site we’re doing soon. (No idea who did the train wreck that is up there now).

If you REALLY want to keep up (good luck) you can bookmark my FriendFeed account, it aggregates just about everything in one place… for some reason. I would have never signed up but a friend mentioned it yesterday and I was in a f*ck it mood… so thanks JP!

We’re currently in a bubble period online and every day a thousand new killer (and 10,000 crappy) new apps come out. It’s borderline impossible to keep up but I’m trying. And now, I’ve just used the last 15 minutes putting this post together… I’m out of time. It’s off to the races for me.

You will be ok.

So how are you playing guitar on your iPhone?

My personal challenge to you: take one day (one WHOLE day) away from the iphone, the computer, and work. Don’t even turn on any music. I know, I know! It sounds crazy, but you’d be amazed at what comes to you when you don’t have all those distractions. You can do it! No cheating!

Listen to your inner-Malan.
