This Gift Wrapping Hack Could Change Your Life

Can you believe it’s almost Christmas?

Another year has blown by and pretty soon we’ll all be traveling, stressing and taking part in the holiday madness.

But before all the chaos begins, let’s both take a deep breath.

Because, I have a holiday treat for you.

Today, I’m going to show you a gift wrapping hack to wrap a gift in 7 seconds. Then I’ll tell you how to apply that same hack to your entire life.

Christmas Gifts

I suck at wrapping gifts. It’s something I’ve always sucked at and something that I thought I would suck at for the rest of my life.

The presents I wrap look like they were run over by a truck.

Something like this

This year I decided to enact the Asian Efficiency 3 Times Rule and solve the problem for good.

*The 3 Times Rule: When you have a recurring problem that bothers you more than 3 times, write it down. When you have time, take 5-10 minutes to solve the problem so that it never bothers you again.

The Gift Wrapping Hack

I did a search online for gift wrapping tutorials and came across this headline:

Stop Everything And Watch This One Life-Changing Wrapping Hack”.

I thought the headline was pretty damn brilliant. And if you’re into marketing I’ll explain why:

  • Stop Everything” got my attention
  • Watch” let me know it was a video
  • One” told me I only had to do one thing
  • Life-Changing” made it sound important
  • Wrapping Hack” made it sound like a trick that would make it easy (versus something like “Tutorial” or “Lesson”)

So I clicked.

Here’s what I saw:

An expert gift wrapper demonstrates a lightning fast method for wrapping the perfect gift every time.

And she really only changed one thing.

Don’t see a video? Click here to see it on Youtube.

The major difference between what she is doing and what I (and probably you) do is she changes the angle of the package on the paper. That’s it.

I immediately tried it after watching the video and all of the sudden, I’m an expert.

I can now wrap a damn good Christmas gift in about 5 seconds.

Pretty Cool Hu?

If you’re anything like me (gift wrap challenged) that video just made your head explode. And this post will be worth it just for that tip alone.

But – it should also get you thinking.

What other areas of your life do you think you “suck at”?

  • What if you looked at the problem from a slightly different angle?
  • Could a tiny adjustment completely change your outcomes?

There’s a damn good chance it could.

How To Use The Hack On Your Life

Your challenge today is to solve a recurring problem by looking at it from a new angle.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Choose one problem. Only one at a time (always one)
  2. Stop what you’re doing that’s not working
  3. Try it from a different angle or perspective

You may find that a small adjustment, like turning the box to an angle, is all you need to do to master the skill or solve the problem and finally overcome that thing that’s been holding you back.

And if it works, you can go from “suck” to mastery in less than an hour.

Let me know how it goes.

Damn good tip indeed Malan. Plus, i’ve swiped the copy to model my next headline! Cheers!

      • samrex

Man I tried so hard to do this bit couldn’t get it right with bigger packages, worked great for me w smaller stuff tho

  • iAmAttila

I just finished xmas shopping and this post couldn’t have come at a better time. Talk about being efficient!! Thanks man

    • Malan Darras

I’m glad you get it. I got a few people saying “why are you posting about how to wrap gifts???”.. I’m like dude… duuuuuuuuuuude.

      • Ken L

I’m guessing those people don’t know anything about keeping a list of readers engaged. Also probably did not read and learn the “3 Times Rule” either…

        • Malan Darras

well everyone has their right to their opinion… and opinions are like…

  • Stan Oleynik

Re-wrote the headline a bit and used it for one of my lists… worked like a charm, haha! 🙂

P.S. On a related note, awesome hack – thanks for sharing!

  • Ben O

always important to see those inefficiencies and automate them away. on a side note: small world. that video was posted by a friend of mine from Honolulu when he was on his last trip to Japan.

  • Kiriel Johnson

I can’t seem to get this to work. Maybe my piece of wrapping paper is too big or I’m missing something somewhere
